Buy it or not – iPhone 3g releasing in India
posted by Mobile Games in Categories General, Mobile Device Information, Mobile Industry News

We have  hardly 2 weeks for the release of the long awaiting iPhone 3G in India. Now, arises question on why buy it and is it going to be really 3G and worth paying like hell in the initial days. When Airtel and Vodafone release a new technology, I know how their charges might be. I have had good experience with Airtel when I was the first person to apply for GPRS in my home town 4 years back. I have a few questions I would like my readers to answer before I decide to buy this gadget.

1) Why iPhone is exciting everyone?
We have atleast 300 different mobile models in Nokia itself and the count should be alteast a 100 with Sony Ericsson. When we have atleast 600 different models from different makes, why is iPhone surprising? Why is there such cool talks around the techie people about this particular product. I would hate if the answer is “Apple”. But if that is the answer, why is Apple amazing? Ofcourse they have good selling line of products like iPod etc but what makes them really amazing.

2) What’s new with iPhone and is that you can contact Aliens?
As if Apple allows you to make calls to Aliens, people just stand in queue for days. And its not the same when Nokia releases a new product or any other big brands either. When you count technology, I am sure iPhone is going to fall way behind the others. But then is it free? no, atleast cheaper? no, they give something free with it? no. Then why iPhone?

3) Where do they stand in hardware specification?
iPhone has a CPU (412 MHz ARM 1176 processor) which is comparably good but we still have other devices with better CPUs. What is with the sound quality? I don’t expect anything more than what I get from my Sony Ericsson K790i which has the enough sound quality I expect. And anything amazing with camera? no, its far beyond what am used with. 3.2 Megapixel camera in my K790i when I have only 2mp and no video recording feature.

4) Touch screen?
Am a game developer both by passion and profession and am not surprised with this phone for 2 reasons. One being, the mobile phone doesn’t support the platform am good at (Java2ME). and the other one is it has no keys which might be good for games. I dont think 3D games might be good experience with a touch screen, or even any 2d game might not be exciting when played using touch screens. May be it good for normal users, and am not one among them. I am even surprised with the browser, how does one navigate among links in a webpage so easy with his touch screen?

Finally, its up to my readers to decide, and give me the right reason for my questions.

I will say Iphone is a good option to buy , but you must be an apple fan to use it up to the max. Shiny gadgets look good initially, but later when you get used to, they seem just ordinary. As for me, I dont like limitations … so if Iphone is locked to one carrier , I wont be actually going for it. But as discussed and thought over my blog, Apple wants people to use Iphone not just as another phone..but with full functionality…. thats why you have contract ..so that you get loads of stuffs ( like data package..applications.. software etc etc ) which a normal user never think of while using a phone.

However, I think I am dropping my plan to buy Iphone..Nokia touch phone is giving me hopes … :)

Am not an Apple fan in any way, I’ve never used apple’e product in my life yet. I am not going to worry about the carrier coz I am using Airtel and no idea for changing it, and Airtel offers iPhone from 22nd August. Nice tips, I know you are Nokia freak. Am also waiting for the touch thing from Nokia.

[...] , the main reason of publishing this story was something about Apple and Iphone. Harishankar over mobilejgames ask his readers why should he buy an Iphone 3G in India, and here you see one reason for which rich people wont [...]

You shouldn’t i would say why would you pay for this piece of cold crap and a rounded box full of limitations, its show business that’s what apple does , i am not saying you should buy nokia or sonyericsson but buy something useful buy something that works for you why pay for something for the sake of having it because its new and shiny and everyone’s talking about it, im not a windows or linux or any other fan but i would buy something that gives me some good stuff for the money and i think no apple products are worth buying because they all of them are nothing more but a show off and a status symbol.

@Ehsan,
Nice comment. But I have seen good response from the techie people saying iPhone is special and the user interface is extremely good compared to other phones in the market. I don’t think its a piece of crap, as it is much cheaper and 3G enabled. Other than being shiny and catching the news, iphone has its best Touchscreen interface thats the best part of the device(Experts review from other websites). Ofcourse Apple’s products are good show offs and status symbol, but Apple has proved their product line very well. I don’t think their products are not worth the price they charge.

Why you should not buy an Iphone in India

It’s all a big hype. Iphone 3G may not be used to its full potential in India. There are plenty of other reasons
Reception Issues
Battery does not even last for 8 hours
Locked in to a particular carrier in India etc..,

Hi all

There is a myth in the market place on low pricing of the product (reference price point being Rs. 8000 or Rs.12000/- which refers to AT&T pricing of USD 199 or USD 299).

The reports don’t factor the commitment which a customers needs to give for a particular Price Plan for a period of 24 Months in the case of AT&T. For O2 the commitment is for 18 months with selected plans.

But, if we calculate other cost like montly rental for voice, i.e., 69.99 (USD), the total cost of ownership for the period of 24 months for a 8 GB model comes around Rs.81000/-! The total cost of ownership for O2 is around Rs.200000/- over a period of 18 months.

In first look it looks high, but in long term, it is still cheaper in India. So, don’t stop urself from buying this lovely gadget…
